Bokksu founder Danny Taing came to love local snacks while living in Japan, then noticed how difficult they were to find in the United States.
In 2015, Danny returned to the United States carrying Japanese snacks for friends and family. Their enthusiasm exposed a larger problem: many specialties came from family businesses that did not sell overseas, and Danny wanted to change that limited access.
Bokksu marks 2016 as the year its boxes began shipping, with Danny packing them in his living room. The operation later expanded beyond that setting and beyond a single monthly subscription.

VISIT THE ARCHIVEDanny selects White Strawberry from Nagano Prefecture, a Japanese snack he describes as crunchy, tart, and not too sweet.
Danny says he has tasted over a thousand snacks, yet his favorite part of Bokksu is sending food lovers boxes filled with culture and delight, then hearing their feedback.
Bokksu keeps its focus on bringing cultures closer through authentic Asian food.
